Selling Print-on-Demand on Etsy from Vietnam: The Verified 2026 Playbook
Verified 2026 guide to selling print-on-demand on Etsy from Vietnam: shop registration rules, production partner disclosure, fees in VND, and Etsy vs Shopify.
There is a lot of outdated advice floating around Vietnamese seller groups about Etsy — that you need a US LLC, a foreign bank account, or a rented identity to open a shop. As of July 2026, none of that is true: Vietnam is on Etsy's official list of countries eligible for Etsy Payments, which means new shops can register from Vietnam directly, get paid to a Vietnamese bank account in VND, and run print-on-demand legitimately under Etsy's production partner rules. This guide covers exactly what Etsy's own Help Center and Seller Policy say — the registration requirements, the POD disclosure rules, the full fee stack in VND, and an honest comparison with running POD on your own Shopify store.
Can You Open an Etsy Shop from Vietnam? (Verified July 2026)
Etsy's rule is simple: in most locations where Etsy Payments is not available, new shops cannot onboard at all. If your country isn't in the dropdown during shop setup, you can't sell — that's the situation sellers in many countries face today (Etsy explicitly says new shops still cannot open in China, for example).
Vietnam is not one of those countries. Etsy's "Countries Eligible for Etsy Payments" page lists Vietnam as fully supported — and notably, without the Payoneer asterisk that applies to countries like Thailand, India, or Ukraine. Vietnamese sellers connect a local bank account directly, and Etsy's payment processing fee table even has a dedicated Vietnam line (4.5% + 11,500₫ per order, charged when your bank account is in Vietnam).
What about the "US LLC workaround"? Because Vietnam is directly supported, the main historical reason for registering through a foreign entity is gone. Some agencies still sell "US shop" setups — a US LLC, US bank account, and US-registered shop operated from Vietnam. Be clear-eyed about the risk: Etsy's Seller Policy requires you to "provide honest, accurate information to Etsy," your government ID must match the name on the bank account, and Etsy reserves the right to suspend your account and any accounts it determines are related to it. Misrepresenting who runs the shop and from where is a ToS violation with your entire revenue stream as collateral. If you want the details on what gets shops banned, read our breakdown of Etsy account suspension risks. Registering honestly as a Vietnamese seller is supported, cheaper, and removes the single biggest account risk before you list your first product.
What Registration Actually Requires
Straight from Etsy's "How to Open an Etsy Shop" guide, here is the onboarding checklist for a Vietnamese seller:
- Create an Etsy account and start at Etsy.com/sell — shop setup must be done in a desktop browser, not the Seller app.
- Set shop preferences. Country: Vietnam. Currency: your listing currency (most VN POD sellers list in USD to sell to US buyers — note this triggers a currency conversion fee later). Language cannot be changed after setup.
- Pick a shop name — 4–20 characters, no spaces or special characters.
- Connect your bank account. Select Vietnam as the bank country and choose your seller type (individual/sole proprietorship or incorporated business) for tax purposes.
- Pay the one-time set-up fee. Etsy charges a one-time, non-refundable shop set-up fee; the amount varies by location and is displayed during checkout in the setup flow.
- Verify your identity through Persona. You submit a photo of a government ID plus a selfie. The ID must be unexpired and must match the name on the bank account you added. This is why borrowed identities and mismatched bank accounts fail.
- Enable two-factor authentication — mandatory before the shop opens.
- Publish your first listing to go live.
None of this requires a business license — Etsy states it doesn't require one, though you remain responsible for Vietnamese regulations that apply to you as an online seller (see our guide to tax and bookkeeping across multiple stores for how to keep cross-border income clean from day one).
POD Is Legal on Etsy — If You Follow the Production Partner Rules
Etsy bans dropshipping and reselling, but print-on-demand is explicitly supported through the production partner framework. A production partner is "a company or individual (who's not part of your Etsy shop) that physically produces items based on your own, original designs" — Etsy's own examples include Printful, Printify, and Gooten.
The rules that matter:
- You must be the designer. Production partners only apply to items you designed (or items the buyer customizes). Uploading purchased templates, unedited stock graphics, or someone else's art printed on a mug is reselling — a policy violation that can end in suspension.
- You must disclose the partner on every relevant listing. Add the partner in Shop Manager under Settings → Production partners, then attach it to each POD listing. You can show the company name or a descriptive title like "apparel printer," but the disclosure itself is not optional. Buyers see it in your shop's About section.
- Label the listing honestly. POD items are "designed by" you, not "handmade by" you. Misclassifying them is a serious violation.
- Set the real shipping location. If Printify's US facility ships the order, your listing's ship-from location must say so — not "Hanoi."
- Use your own photos or approved mockups. Etsy requires your own photographs or video content, with limited exceptions for items made with production partner assistance — don't copy another shop's images.
- Disclose AI. If a design was created using AI tools, Etsy's Seller Policy requires disclosure on the listing.
- Ship US orders DDP. Etsy requires orders shipped to the United States to use Delivery Duty Paid shipping. With US-based POD fulfillment this is a non-issue; it matters if you ever self-fulfill from Vietnam.
Practical upside for Vietnamese sellers: because your production partner prints and ships from the US or EU, your delivery times and tracking look identical to a domestic seller's. Your location only shows as the shop's location — it does not put you in a worse shipping position.
The Real Fee Stack for a Vietnamese Seller
Etsy's fees are published per-country, so we can be precise. With a bank account in Vietnam:
| Fee | Amount (verified July 2026) |
|---|---|
| Shop set-up fee | One-time, varies by location, shown at setup |
| Listing fee | $0.20 per listing per 4 months (auto-renews) |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% of order total incl. shipping & gift wrap |
| Payment processing (Vietnam) | 4.5% of total + 11,500₫ per order |
| Regulatory Operating fee (Vietnam) | 1.24% of item price + shipping |
| Currency conversion | 2.5% when your listing currency ≠ VND |
| Offsite Ads (when it drives the sale) | 15% (12% if you made $10,000+ in past 365 days), capped at $100/order |
| Deposit fee | 45,000₫ if payout is below the 2,300,000₫ threshold (minimum deposit 45,000₫) |
Worked example. A $30 order (a $25 tee + $5 shipping), listed in USD, paid out to a VND bank account:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee 6.5%: $1.95
- Payment processing 4.5% + 11,500₫: $1.35 + 11,500₫
- Regulatory Operating fee 1.24%: $0.37
- Currency conversion 2.5%: ~$0.75
That's roughly $4.62 + 11,500₫ — over 15% of the order — before you pay Printify or Printful for the blank, printing, and fulfillment, and before any Offsite Ads fee (another $4.50 if that sale came from one). Margins work, but only if you price with the full stack in mind. We break down every line item with more scenarios in Etsy fees explained, and cover payout timing, VND deposits, and reserve holds in our guide to Etsy Payments for Vietnamese sellers.
Etsy POD vs POD on Your Own Shopify Store
Most experienced Vietnamese POD operators end up asking the same question: keep feeding Etsy ~13–15%+ per order, or build on Shopify where the platform take is lower but the traffic is yours to generate?
| Factor | Etsy | Your Shopify store |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic | Built-in marketplace demand; buyers search on Etsy | Zero by default — you buy or build every visitor |
| Per-order platform take (VN seller) | ~13–15%+ of order value before ads | Subscription + payment processing; no marketplace commission |
| Account risk | One suspension kills the whole shop; related accounts can go with it | You own the store; payment provider risk still exists |
| Brand & customer data | Etsy's customer, Etsy's rules (no off-platform contact) | Your list, your remarketing, your pricing tests |
| Scaling | One shop per identity; duplicate shops prohibited | Run 5, 10, 30 niche stores in parallel |
The honest answer for most sellers is both, in sequence. Etsy is the cheapest way to validate designs against real demand — the buyer traffic is already there, and a POD listing costs $0.20 to test. Shopify is where validated winners scale, because you control ads, upsells, and customer data, and nobody can suspend your entire business over a flagged listing. We've written a full comparison in Etsy vs Shopify in 2026 and a playbook for running Etsy and Shopify together.
The catch with the Shopify route is operational: winners get cloned into multiple niche stores, and suddenly you're reconciling orders, tracking numbers, and payouts across a dozen admins. That's the problem multi-store POD operations tooling exists to solve — platforms like StoreFleet put every Shopify store's orders, revenue, shipment tracking, and disputes in one realtime dashboard (Shopify only — it does not connect to Etsy, so your Etsy shop stays managed in Etsy's Shop Manager).

Mistakes That Get Vietnamese POD Shops Suspended
- Faking the shop location or identity. ID, bank account name, and shop country must line up. Related accounts get terminated together.
- Skipping production partner disclosure. The single most common POD violation — it takes two minutes in Shop Manager and its absence is treated as misrepresentation.
- Trademarked designs. Anime characters, sports logos, and brand phrases are IP violations; Etsy removes listings and repeat offenses end accounts.
- Marking POD items "handmade by me." Use "designed by" — Etsy treats the mislabel as a severe violation.
- Moving buyers off-platform. Sharing payment links, social handles, or bank transfer instructions in Messages is explicitly prohibited.
- Duplicate shops. Opening a second shop to relist the same catalog or dodge a suspension violates the Seller Policy directly.
Register honestly, disclose your printer, design original work, and price with the full 15% stack in mind — that's the whole legitimate game. It's less exciting than the loophole threads in seller groups, but it's the version that still has a shop running twelve months later.
